NPC One Heart

NPC One Heart is made up of the combined Nasopharyngeal Cancer Support Groups at National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. The medical advisors to the groups are Dr. Choo Bok Ai and Dr Lee Khai Mun. Dr Choo is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Dr. Lee Khai Mun is a Consultant Radiation Oncologist. The Support groups are headed by NPC cancer survivors and the leader of the groups is Mr. Peter Tang. Peter had NPC 22 years ago when he was in his 30's and started the groups to help other cancer survivors in their cancer journeys. The support groups launched the Befriender's programme in 2011. The programme links the newly diagnosed patients to cancer survivors who had undergone similar treatments to help them cope emotionally and they frequently give very good remedies to deal with the physical and emotional aspect of coping with the cancer. The support groups also engage various medical specialists to improve cancer survivors' knowledge through a series of medical talks on surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, coping with dry mouths, hormonal imbalance, hearing problems, dental care, nutrition support before, during and after treatment and traditional chinese medicine use in NPC. These meetings help to empower cancer survivors to learn more about coping with the side effects of previous treatments and ways to minimize them. There are also social events for the groups to celebrate life after cancer.
